Sabres Avenge Arizona with 6-3 Win

The Buffalo Sabres met up with Arizona Coyotes in Buffalo Thursday night after their loss in the desert this past Sunday. It was also one day after the trade deadline had passed allowing every Sabres player to throw that aside as well. It was time for a fresh start, the players felt it, the fans at least hoped for it.

It was the big guns that did the damage in this contest. Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and 2 assists, Jack Eichel continued his scoring pace with a goal and 2 assists as well. Marcus Foligno also added two goals. Eichel now has an 8 game point streak going that places him tied for 2nd in the NHL with 18 pts (3g,15a) since February 1st. Evander Kane also scored and now has five goals in his last seven games and is currently tied for 5th in the league with 22 even-strength goals.

It was Arizona’s Teemu Pulkkinen that opened the scoring with his 2nd of the season at 8:54 of the first. He was assisted by Max Domi and Christian Dvorak. The 1-0 lead held up for exactly four minutes while the Sabres were on the Penalty-Kill, MarcusFoligno with his 11th was set up for the shorthanded goal by Ryan O’Reilly and Rasmus Ristolainen tying the game at one goal apiece.

Then just under a minute into the second, it was Ryan O’Reilly again, this time he scored the goal for his 14th of the season while the Sabres were on the powerplay. The assists went to Jack Eichel and Kyle Okposo. That gave Buffalo the lead once again until 2:05 of the period when the Coyotes would pick up a shorthanded goal of their own. Tobias Rieder scored his 14th, unassisted.

The Sabres reclaimed the one goal 3-2 lead with a picture perfect three-way passing play at 11:08. Kyle Okposo passed the puck to Sam Reinhart who fed a perfect pass to a wide open Jack Eichel who had the whole open side and did not miss. The goal was Eichel’s 15th and his 10th point (2g, 8A) in his 8 game point streak.

However, Arizona fought back to knot the game up at 3-3 at 8:20 of the third when Alex Goligoski sent a seeing-eye puck past Robin Lehner for his 3rd from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Tobias Rieder. Unfortunately for them the brick wall slammed shut while Buffalo kept on rolling.

Evander Kane scored the eventual game winner at 14:24 with his team leading 23rd of the season from Ryan O’Reilly and Jake McCabe. The score stayed 4-3 Buffalo until 18:17. Then with Arizona goalie Mike Smith on the bench, Marcus Foligno backhanded his 12th of the season into the open net to make it 5-3 Sabres. He was assisted by Jack Eichel and Cody Franson. The Coyotes would pull their goalie for one last hope, but it backfired with four seconds left as Sam Reinhart banked in his 15th off the leg of the player in front of the open net.

The Sabres will be back in action on Saturday 7:00 p.m. against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
