Sabres Fall Short in Columbus, 4-3

The Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets met Friday night inside Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Sabres opened the first of a back to back series with the aspirations of coming away with a win. The Blue Jackets came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the league with three consecutive shutout wins. And it has been all on the back of Vezina Trophy candidate Sergie Bobrovsky.

However, Evan Rodrigues ended Bobrovsky’s shutout streak at 2:50 of the first period with his 3rd of the season from Nick Deslauriers. The Sabres 1-0 lead held up until the 6:09 mark of the period when David Savard scored his 4th from Brandon Dubinsky.

Then with just under three minutes left to play in the period Nick Foligno, brother of Sabres Marcus Foligno, scored his 23rd from Alexander Wennberg and Zach Werenski. Shots after one favored the Jackets 14-8.

The Sabres fought back to tie the game once more just under five minutes into the second. Josh Gorges fired a shot from the point into the net for his 1st of the season from Matt Moulson and Sam Reinhart.

However, with 14 seconds left in the Blue Jackets powerplay, Sam Gagne added his 17th from Seth Jones and Jack Johnson. Shots on goal after forty favored Columbus 28-18.

Buffalo tied the game for the third time with just over 14 minutes to play in the third period. Rasmus Ristolainen scored his 5th by firing a shot from the point that eluded the Blue Jackets goalie and slid into the net to tie the game at three. Jake McCabe and Marcus Foligno earned the assists.

Then with just over four minutes left to play in the third, the Blue Jackets Boone Jenner converted on a turnover for his 14th from Cam Atkinson for the 4-3 late lead. The Sabres pulled their goalie in the final minute of the game but were unable to capitalize. The Sabres have now lost their 4th straight game. For the second successive game, the Sabres played from behind. They just can’t put all aspects of their game together to put in a solid game from start to finish.

The Sabres will head back home for a rematch against these same Blue Jackets Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
